Headland, Great Barrier Island NZ.  12 x 16 in.  Acrylic on canvas board.

This was done mainly with a pallet knife and some minor detail with a brush.  Painting with the blade makes these wonderful spontaneous marks in the clouds and beach.  The thick paint and the texture on the headland also gives added interest to the composition.

Rural Idyl 9 x 12 inches  acrylic on panel

I have not posted for quite a while so here is a little daily painting I did today in about two hours.

Lake Louise Canada  Acrylic on canvas 75cm x 65cm

This painting has been reworked from an older version.
Deleted a lot of detail and broke up a few edges and background areas.
This helped to focus attention on the main focal areas.
Painting not available.

Fire and Ice.  Acrylic on 12mm box canvas. 75cm x 35cm

Here is an example of texture and shapes using a variety of paint application and removal techniques.  New Zealand sits on the edge of two tectonic plates which is why we have so many mountain ranges, geothermal, volcanoes and earthquakes in this country.

Karaka Bay with seagull!   acrylic on canvas.

Here is a painting done many moons ago with some tinkering and fixer-upper-ing.
This bay on Great Barrier Island is where I spent 20 years of my working life. Its idylic, captivating and very isolated from city life.  An artists paradise and no mistake.

 Taupo Marina 2021   16 x 20 inches.

A quick sketch of our wee harbour here in Taupo NZ.  I enjoy painting boats, just not going out in them. I liked the different styles represented from older motor launches to the new beasts.  The loose mono chrome background focuses attention on the moored boats, pure and simple.

Slope Point, South Island.  20cm x 20cm  Acrylic on board.

In many places, around the coast, of the most southern points of New Zealand the trees grow at acute angles like this due to the strong prevailing winds.  This looks like a gale is blowing, but it was actually a calm day.  SOLD

This is my studio. A large room with space for a framing table, easel, storage and exhibition wall. The table is currently a rather messy work space, however, hidden under that sheet is a half size slate pool table.  This gets used but rarely I have to say.  It actually came with the house, too difficult to move I am guessing.

'Fishing boats with sailers'  12 x 16 in.  Acrylic on canvas panel.

A slightly contemporary interpretation of boats at Riverton Wharf, NZ.

 Pohutakawa Tree  30 x 30cm  Acrylics.

Another version of an earlier image of mine.

'The Dinghy'  I painted this very carefully then attacked it with various marks and swaiths of colour. I was attempting to morph this toward the contemporary.  Has it worked? Hard to say, it may not be quite there yet?  I chose to leave off though, rather than risk destroying 3 days of work.

 Wild flower study  30 x 30cm Acrylics.

A partial abstract floral study?

'Mt. Ruapehu from Lake Taupo'  acrylic on canvas.  100cm x 30cm

This painting was done over a year ago. Not sure why I never posted it before?
Painting not available.

 Low tide at Cox's Bay.  16in x 20in.  Acrylic

Never having used a pallet knife in painting before I had a crack at it on the trees and rather liked the result. I am a bit of a sucker for texture so went for it on the large foreground. Actually, I was trying to create a semi abstract but it has ended up with more representational look than I intended. I am not entirely unsatisfied with the result mind you. I think it works.

Brian 30cm X30cm Acrylic & collage on canvas.

A little tribute for my younger brother who tragically died during lockdown here in NZ.  He used to be a jazz/blues drummer and loved his music.  He was a gentle soul and a deep thinker.

Collection of Mr. P. Mitchener
