Surf at Kings Beach, Sunshine Coast.

I don't really paint waves as a rule, but I'm always up for a challenge and willing to have a go, so here is an a small study of a wave I did recently.

Shelley Beach, Moffat Point.

This looks a little different from my normal style. I was attracted to the reflections dispersed with the tidal mud shapes. I went for the narrow portrait format in order to maximize the foreground area. I also liked the colours here just before sunset.

'Morning light - Paramata'  9x12 Acrylic

A perfect day at Paramata Harbour, Wellington. The water was like glass, subjects to paint abounded everywhere.

'Low tide - Paramata inlet'  12x14 in. Acrylic on canvas

This small harbour is a painters heaven. Boats, buildings, water etc. While driving past recently one beautiful clear day we made a quick detour, grabbed the camera and fired of a load of shots.  I cropped 90% off this photo to find the composition. It has a nice 'Z' format to it.

'Mountain pass' 6 x 6 in.  acrylic on board.

We were down south and near the mountains early autumn a year ago. I took a bunch of photos for painting reference later.
This week I hauled them out of my i photo files, chose what I thought had the most potential and cropped them heavily for these little 6x6 in. studies. Its a quick way to see if any of them could make bigger paintings. Some work some don't.

This one above definitely has potential I think. I simplified the trees ( there were lots more), moved the road around to make it more interesting and increased the amount of lake showing at the base of the mountain.

9x12 Acrylic on canvas panel.  "Early Morning Run'  Not much to say on this one. I am still working on simplifying the shapes and composition. In painting less is actually more.

'Getting ready to sail' 9x12 in. acrylic on canvas.

At a recent paint out session I began the above painting struggling with high wind gusts that threatened to take my easel and toss it into the sea. Paint tubes and coffee mug were being whisked away by the wind as well. Finally my centre of interest ( the sailing dinghy) was gone onto the water as well. (I guess thats what they came for, not to pose for me). I had no option but to take a couple of quick photos and complete the painting at home. Happy days.
