Great Barrier Coastline

This is another experiment where I played with the shapes, manipulating them a bit but still keeping a faithful representation of the place.  It has a nice sense of balance and colour harmony which I like. It is not fussy at all, the bold chunky look adds to its appeal in my view.

Wellington Houses

New Zealands capitol city, Wellington, has a predominance of weather board timber houses that cling to the bush covered hills like bats hanging from a cave ceiling.  This rather interesting group of houses caught my eye several years ago and here I have finally got around to painting the scene.  One can't rush these things now!
The painting has not really matched my inner vision, but then does painting ever capture what we imagine internally?  However its not a bad attempt and will hopefully sell.

I saw these old pines on a friends property about 6 months ago and liked the majestic starkness of their forms and the way the light broke through their bulk.  I decided to do a stylized piece rather than a straight representational picture because I wanted to emphasize the forms.  This is a relatively new approach for me although I have dabbled with the technique before.

This was done a while ago as an exercise with some students.  I am working on a few larger pictures at present so don't have much work to share.  Life does get busy this time of year as we all know.

There is not a lot to say about this one!  I like the light on the face. It was a good exercise and thankfully not too fiddled with.

Okiwi Valley

This pretty valley basin lies over the hill from our bay, it has a small cluster of houses that couldn't even be called a village. I have always liked the silver ribbon of the estuary that snakes across the valley when the sun hits its surface.  This was a very quick rendering done in less than an hour.

This is a little different for me primary colours on a stark black background. I conceived the idea, did a quick thumbnail sketch and just went for it, maybe a little too hasty as it didn't really turn out as I intended. I did have fun painting those caterpillars though.
